Vedas constitute the oldest layer of  Sanskrit  literature and the oldest scriptures referred by Hindus. These remain to be the most vulnerable scriptures known to mankind in the modern times. Sanskrit literature is classified into two genres

  1. Vedic literature: One that is used in Vedas.
  2. Laukik literature: Humane-evolved Sanskrit literature. For instance, the one used in Ramayana, Persian, Buddhist, etc

Vedic literature and Laukik literature don’t differ in myriad ways instead, they have one vital difference which contributes to their division i.e., linguistic. In Vedic literature the word “Agni” has been stated as “Anything that comes first”, whereas the already stated meaning of Agni drifts its way and is mentioned as fire in Laukik literature.

Having said all that, Vedas are the oldest books known to mankind. They are the fountain-head of all knowledge ; whether of the material world or the spiritual world.

They are four in number-

Vedas which are heard are called “Sruti“.Vedas which are remembered are called “smriti“(religious texts).

The Samhitas, Aranyankas,Brahmanas,Upanishads, and Upasanas are the sub classifications of the ancient scriptures.

Although, the origin of the Vedas has been conjectural, the conservative estimate has been of 5000 years whereas according to the Indian tradition it has been existing since the advent of mankind(1.97 billion years old) .The Samhitas date to roughly 1700–1100 BCE,resulting in a Vedic period, spanning the mid 2nd to mid 1st millennium BCE, or the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Vedas are believed to be not created by man- Apaurusheya, but revealed to the sages who have put them into verses. The four Vedas have been compiled by four different sages.

  1. Rig-Veda: Agni
  2. Yajur-Veda: Vaayu
  3. Sama-Veda: Aaditya
  4. Atharva-Veda: Angiraa

Though the mythical description of the Vedas is as hymns. The immense knowledge that resides in them is slowly being spotlighted. To know what, keep watching this space.
